Yin Yang
I remember reading book after book while I was going through so much turmoil. Every time I read about “duality” my eyes would glaze over. It just seemed like they were speaking a different language. Then, I seemed to happen across the symbol of Yin-Yang everywhere, so I decided it must be a symbol of enlightenment. I never read anything that showed how the Yin-Yang and duality related with each other. Although I don’t presume to know the origins of Daoism, or the specific theories written about the Yin-Yang fifteen hundred years ago, I certainly don’t see it as a symbol of enlightenment! It has come to represent – for me – the definition of pain.

Lower earthly energies, (there seems to be no other kind), are two sides of the same coin. Heads or tails, left or right, up or down, right or wrong, good or bad, cause and effect. This is all they know. Lower energies that are around you and in you and so thick on this earth that you can’t help but breathe them in like air, only know two things; how to build it up and how to tear it down – for infinity. The best real-life example I can give goes something like this;

An energy of the earth feels...

“They had no right to treat me that way. They never should have treated me with such disrespect. I’m going to prove them wrong. They have no idea how smart I am. I will work and work. I will be diligent. I will be smarter and faster than anyone. Then, they will see my abilities. Then, they will be sorry.”
Finally, this entity finds the opportunity to absolutely spend every ounce of energy to prove its worth. It shines brighter than the sun. It perseveres. It proves at all costs that it is worthy of respect – almost to its own demise. After the crescendo of success, it is exhausted and barely breathing. Then... a seemingly random and unaware person walks by, looks down on the exhausted victor of its latest battle and says with disgust, "you must be the laziest person I've ever seen", and the cycle begins again.
This is the Yin-Yang – this is duality.
Every spectacular - almost supernatural - basketball game that Michael Jordan ever played was preempted by an act of disrespect - real or manufactured by him - in order to create the motivation he needed to retaliate with utter greatness.
Daoism might teach that under these circumstances Michael Jordan found the perfect balance and created the perfect Yin-Yang... and they may be right. But I believe this is the opposite of what what we must strive to do. I believe that we must bring infinity to that which only understands; up or down, right or wrong, good or bad. I believe that this is the meaning of, "on earth as it is in heaven".
Offering up infinite options to an earthly energy throws the Yin-Yang into a tailspin – literally. It breaks its hold and it loosens its grip and at the same time, welcomes a multitude of new thoughts and feeling and energies you can’t even imagine. Even a third option throws an earthly energy out of balance. The hint of moving from a dichotomy to a triad is enough.
It may help to think about it like this;

When you focus on a new thought, feeling or thing, you’ve made an attempt to bring something new into your life. Something lighter, better, softer, more beautiful, more abundant, more loving, etc. By doing so, you just put a ton of energy into the “Yin” side of this new energy you want in your life. You visualized, you felt what it would feel like, you ramped it up, you did everything right, but your beautiful meditation inadvertently destroyed the balance.
Everything of this earth strives to stay energetically in balance with the left/right, up/down, right/wrong, and the good comes with the bad and the bad with the good. You can’t have the light without the darkness. So… as shocking and painful as it may appear, you know you’re doing something right, when the “Yang” comes along all lopsided and throws your life out of balance by showing you the opposite of all your lovely desires. This is what you have to be ready for when you properly meditate, or properly make a statement of manifestation to the universe, or properly pray - you have to be prepared to see the opposite of what you opened to receive - and this can be painful. Use the same determination you used to visualize a better life and allow the Yang to pass through with no resistance - until you create a new balance with your new energy. Then do it again and again.
Once I looked in the mirror and saw a monkey-face. My ears and eyes and the shape of my head made me laugh. Somehow, this brought to reality… reality. I recognized very clearly; I’m a spirit in a monkey. Experiencing all this monkey’s tendencies and feelings and earthly connections to see if this spirit can cut through the muck and the mire and the monkey-man, to find something that’s not; either-or, up-down, right-left, good-bad – and live a truth that is infinite.
Earthly energies never completely leave the left side of a concept without beginning to develop and create the right side – (opposite) – of the very same issue. To do anything else, for an earthly energy, is to die. It has to begin creating the opposite, even as its original creation unfolds, in order to sustain itself and its illusion. There is no other way.
